CAMEROON

IYEC Cameroon is engaged in agricultural projects such as palm plantation, cocoa farming, snail farming, poultry farming, mushroom production, tomato farming, plantain farming and maize farming.IYEC Cameroon helps to train farmers with respect to the above projects to generate income within the rural communities near Mamfe and Limbe respectively.

Mamfe is a town in the south west region of Cameroon with about 284 villages. It is found in the tropical rain forest with so many endangered species such as elephants, monkeys etc. Most of the inhabitants of the villages are engaged in hunting as an income generating activity with no government licenses and go as far as killing the endangered species to be used as meat  and sold to generate income.IYEC Cameroon then identified and carried out feasibility studies in these villages, then mobilized, sensitized and trained them on alternative income generating projects such as snail farming, poultry farming, pig farming, mushroom production. They can then produce in large scale and sell to generate income, as well as consume locally, thus preventing them from going to the forest to hunt.

Due to the tropical rain forest in Mamfe,a lot of illegal logging is being practiced within people in that community. This is done by felling trees illegally and selling to people and neighbouring countries such as Nigeria in order to generate income.

IYEC therefore identified, mobilized and trained this people on alternative income generating projects such as palm plantation, cocoa farming, honey bee production, etc.   In Limbe and Buea respectively, situated at the foot of mount Cameroon with its rich volcanic soils, most of the farmers in this villages are poor, carry out peasant farming and lack modern agricultural techniques. As a result, they are unable to generate enough income from their activities to cater for the education of their children, health etc. most of the farmers are engaged in activities such as tomato farming, maize production, vegetable farming and plantain farming.

IYEC therefore improved upon the farmers’ skills by making them to adapt to new farming techniques, large scale production and also help to raise funds to subsidize the farmers. In a nut shell, after identifying, mobilizing, sensitizing and training these farmers,IYEC Cameroon also source funding to subsidize these farmers on this sustainable livelihood project.
